MHA Environmental Scan in North Algoma

AOHT set out to develop a system-level understanding of the current state of mental health and addictions (MHA) services and establish shared goals for future planning in North Algoma.

Background

In response to rising mental health and addictions (MHA) challenges

in rural Northern Ontario, Algoma Ontario Health Team (AOHT)

partners initiated a community-focused environmental scan in

January 2025. Individuals living in North Algoma often face unique

challenges when accessing care, including long travel distances,

limited local services, workforce shortages, and fewer health system

resources. This work was undertaken to better understand the current

MHA system landscape and to support coordinated planning moving

forward.

The environmental scan explored existing strengths, gaps, and barriers

within the system, as well as how people currently move through available

services. A mix of approaches was used to gather input, including

community data, interviews with community members, and engagement

with frontline providers and health system leaders. Engagement activities

were designed with North Algoma’s geography and community context in mind,

with a strong emphasis on relationship building and inclusive participation.

While the scan highlighted strong community organizations and dedicated local supports, it also pointed to ongoing challenges related to service availability, distance and socioeconomic factors. The results suggest opportunities to improve system navigation, build local capacity, enhance collaboration across sectors and explore innovative approaches such as an expanded co-location model.

Together, these insights provide a foundation for collaborative, data-informed initiatives aimed at improving access to equitable MHA care in North Algoma.

Key Objectives

The environmental scan demonstrated a strong, shared commitment among community members, frontline providers, and system leaders to strengthening mental health and addictions services in North Algoma.
